CALVALERA RUSTICANA & I PAGLIACCI

THE ENTRANCE OF THE PLAYERS IN "I PAGLIACCI"
The concept for the 1986 and 1991 Miami Opera productions of "Cav/Pag" grew out of the idea that both operas might well have occurred in the same Sicillian town. That combined with the look of 1920's period Italian Postcards, of which I have a large collection, led to this interesting design outcome. This combination of flat images also lead to the idea of having images seem to explode out of the theatrical frame that is the show portal. Everything forward of the portal would be dimensional, everything behind it would increasingly be flat. This concept also proved valuable in keeping the production within a tight budget.
